Web development uses various programming languages including HTML, XHTML, ASP, Perl, PHP, C++, Java, and CSS. Often, Web development also uses scripting languages such as JavaScript and PHP, although they are not as common or used as programming languages.

Web development is the activity involved in creating a Web site, generally for the Internet or some intranet, for interactive use by individuals or organizations. Web development may range from creating a simple single page of plain text, integrated with graphics, or a complex web application, such as an online store, web mail application, or corporate Web site. The development process begins with the idea for a site, which is stored in development language such as HTML, XHTML, XML, PHP, or COBOL. It is up to the developer to turn this idea into a working web page. Web development also involves adding functionality to a web site by means of adding modules, scripts, or plug-ins to the web page as it is developed. Web development also includes web hosting, design, coding, testing, and modification.
